Problem Definition

"Being financially responsible as an adult .. IS QUITE DAUNTING."
Why do young adults struggle to manage their finances?

Phenomenon:
The generation is constantly improving with the help of technology, many people don’t have to carry cash with the convenience of debit/credit cards. But most people forget to check how much they spend on each purchase per card they own. And this could lead to having insufficient money in the bank or abusing their credit cards.
Research

Based on the article, budgeting debit/credit cards need to be intentionally developed. Budgeting is creating good habits to keep track of monthly spending as groceries, gas, and other daily needs are difficult to estimate. Budgeting helps to keep track of monthly records to save money and if there’s an emergency.

Solution:

Design an app where young adults can easily track all their monthly expenses on top of their busy
day-to-day schedule to budget intentionally and build good habits.

Solution 1
Create a budgeting account
Users can create an account dedicated to all expenses to improve the monthly budget and reduce the stress from budgeting.
Solution 2
Syncing bank & credit cards
The app tracks bank transactions and categorizes the monthly expenses after users sync into the bank accounts.
Solution 3
Shared budget
Users can create a specific shared budget that allows them to budget with their partner or family.

Ideation
Sketched some iterations that were necessary for users' needs and which ideas worked the best. Here's one of the ideation flows.

Wireframes
Turned the sketches into black and white prototypes. Defined the design patterns and visual hierarchy and UI elements.

UI Design
After many iterations and usability testing, here’s the final screen of the budgeting app.

This screen the savings feature of
this app. When users sync their savings accounts, users can see the money
they add or deduct from their savings.
Users also get notifications of transactions in their savings that way users are aware
of any transactions happening
in their savings account.
The app's home screen is an overview of Spending Tracker, Total Expenses, and Total Amount Overspend.
Chose this screen as a home screen to give awareness to the users in terms of finance and budget in their accounts.
The Spending Tracker, Total Expenses, and Total Amount Overspend also have their own individual screens for more details.

User’s Feedback:

-
Users find the overall look of the app very clean and friendly.
-
Very adaptive and easy to use with a straightforward approach to every task.
-
The app has an essential feature to do budget and track finances.

UX Insight

This has been a very exciting and challenging project. I learned a lot more about budgeting and finances and I would love to use a budgeting and finance app earlier on career and life in general. Being able to design an application that aids in making everyday life easier for the user always brings joy to me. I was able to discover more about what users like myself would like to benefit from when it comes to budgeting and finance.

Next Steps

If I had more time on the project, the next steps would be adding a feature like saving account and setting up credit card payment calendar to help users become self aware with their monthly bills and payments.
